Contracted Lifeguard
Job Title: Lifeguard
Location: Zest Centre
Rate of Pay: £12.60 per hour
Hours: Guaranteed 16 hours per week, plus additional casual hours – Immediate Start
Holiday Entitlement: 25 days plus 8 statutory holidays (pro-rata)
Responsible to: Leisure Services Manager and Duty Managers
Purpose of the Role
To be an active member of the Zest lifeguarding team, ensuring the safety of all pool users through vigilant supervision, adherence to safety procedures, and maintenance of a clean, welcoming environment. As a Lifeguard, your enthusiasm for swimming and commitment to outstanding customer service will contribute to a positive experience for all visitors.
You must be available to work early mornings, evenings and weekends for this contracted role.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
Pool Supervision & Safety
- Maintain vigilant supervision of all pool users to ensure safety and enjoyment.
- Respond quickly and appropriately in emergencies, including performing rescues and administering first aid.
- Enforce pool rules and prevent misuse of facilities.
- Open and close the pool as required by the timetable
Customer Service
- Provide excellent customer service, responding to enquiries and resolving issues effectively.
- Collect and report customer feedback, compliments, and complaints to management.
Facility Operations
- Prepare the pool area for programmed sessions (e.g., swimming lessons, disabled sessions, parent & toddler sessions).
- Carry out daily water quality tests, record results, and report any defects to the Duty Manager
- Maintain cleanliness in the pool area, including changing rooms, toilets, and showers.
- Accept and log lost property and report any defects or safety concerns promptly.
Teamwork & Communication
- Work collaboratively with the leisure team to deliver high-quality services.
- Liaise with Duty Managers to ensure safe staffing levels and effective use of equipment and facilities.
Health & Safety
- Follow Zest Centre’s health and safety policies, emergency procedures, and risk assessments.
- Wear the correct uniform and adhere to organisational policies at all times.
Training and Development
- Attend National Pool Lifeguard training sessions once a month to maintain lifeguarding and first aid qualifications.
- Maintain up-to-date training records in accordance with Zest Centre requirements.
- Understand that failure to maintain current qualifications may result in removal from scheduled shifts without pay.
- To undertake training and other developmental activities in line with organisational and personal development needs.
- To ensure that services work towards best practice in equality of opportunity.
- To undertake any other duties as agreed with the Line Manager.
- To carry out all duties and responsibilities as described in line with ZEST policies and procedures, with particular attention to those relating to Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety and Data Protection.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Current National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)
- Swim England Safeguarding training – this will be provided if not already held
Essential Experience and Skills
- Experience working with the general public
- Strong customer service focus
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good general fitness
- Ability to follow instructions and remain calm under pressure
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends
An enhanced DBS check will be required for this post.
